Hand Washing - Essential for Everyone

Why wash your hands? Animals carry germs that can make people ill, particularly young children, elderly visitors, and those with weakened immune systems.

Who needs to wash their hands? Everyone - no exceptions.

When to wash your hands:

  • After touching animals
  • After touching animal enclosures, fences, or equipment
  • After removing dirty shoes
  • After using the toilet
  • Before eating or drinking

How to wash your hands properly:

  1. Wet your hands under running water (use the foot pumps at our sinks)
  2. Apply antibacterial soap from the dispensers and work into a lather
  3. Rub hands together for 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice!)
  4. Rinse thoroughly under running water
  5. Dry with a clean paper towel
  6. Dispose of the paper towel in the bin

Health Risks and Prevention

General Disease Prevention Even small amounts of harmful microorganisms can cause infection. Proper hand washing is your best defence against spreading infections.

Toxoplasmosis Warning Pregnant women or those who may be pregnant face increased risk of infections like toxoplasma, chlamydophila abortus, and listeria from pregnant livestock (sheep and goats). Please take extra precautions.

E. coli O157 & Cryptosporidium These infections can spread through contact with animal faeces, either directly or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth. Thorough hand washing is essential.

Fire Safety

If you hear the fire bell (located outside reception), immediately make your way to the fire assembly point near the entrance. Leave all belongings behind. If you spot a fire, alert staff immediately.

Animal Safety

Interacting with Animals:

  • Pet animals on their backs, away from their mouths
  • Move calmly and quietly to keep animals relaxed
  • Never run or chase animals

Appropriate Clothing:

  • Wear closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops)
  • Wellington boots recommended in wet weather
  • Dress appropriately for outdoor conditions

First aid kits and the accident book are located in reception. Report any accidents to staff immediately.
